Our Organic Rooibos (also known as redbush tea) is indigenous to the Cederberg region of the western Cape of South Africa. It is the only place that it is grown in the world. This small leguminous shrub has needle like leaves and fine stems with tiny yellow flowers. Dried in the sun, Rooibos undergoes oxidation and is processed like traditional teas.
Production of our Organic Rooibos begins in February and March when the seeds are planted. They are then tended for 18 months, after which they are harvested. The cut rooibos is tied and milled to a uniform length, then it is bruised between rollers to trigger the fermentation process, which results in its characteristic flavor and sweet aroma.
As Rooibos is from the Aspalathus linearis plant and not from the camellia sinensis plant, strictly speaking it is considered a tisane and not a tea. It is a herbal, caffeine-free drink, rich in anti-oxidants. Being low in tanins, you can brew the tea for up to 10 minutes without it getting bitter and as such it is great for the whole family anytime of the day, brewed hot or as an iced tea. Pure and natural, it contains no additives, preservatives or colorants. It has a light vanilla scent and yields a rich orange brew, with many health benefits.
As with all our teas, we test all our Rooibos thoroughly prior to bringing the product to market. It's organic status is certified by EcoCert, which has among the most stringent of requirements.
